Back in the 1980s I worked as a courier for a delivery company in Alexandria, VA. The company had a large number of business and government accounts. So one nice day in late spring I took a delivery to one of our accounts which happened to be Major League Baseball which was located in Falls Church, VA ( Baileys Crossroads ) during that point in time. The delivery was a round trip, which meant that the driver would make a drop ( delivery ) and wait for a letter or package to take back to the sender. As I'm waiting for the return letter, I'm walking around MLB's office and checking out the pictures and memorabilia.I saw pictures of Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Harmon Killebrew, Al Kaline, Cal Ripken, Mickey Mantle, Sandy Koufax to name a few. Also there were baseballs, bats, shoes, caps, plaques and other baseball items. So I feel like I've died and gone to Hall of Fame heaven! Well, I grab a nearby bat,heft it a few times, and take a few swings with it. This bat was a warclub,heaviest stick I've ever swung. It was about 36-38 inches long, heavy ash wood with a dark shellac stain. A few minutes later, I pick up the return letter from one of the secretaries and make my exit from the office. Later that day, I returned to my delivery company's office and the boss and dispatcher approached me. The boss was laughing, telling me that one of the women at the Major League Baseball office had called him to complain that one of his drivers was in their office swinging Babe Ruth's bat! Luckily for me, my boss was a baseball fan so there was no repercussions. But what a great thrill when I found out that I was holding a bat that the mighty Bambino, Babe Ruth, had held and swung on his way to Cooperstown.
